2. And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

- That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. Matt. 13:35

- Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. Acts 8:35

- Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: Acts 10:34

3. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

- For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Isa. 57:15

- For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. Isa. 66:2

- And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Luke 18:13

4. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

- To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. Isa. 61:3

- For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 2 Cor. 7:10

- And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Rev. 21:4

5. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

- (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) Num. 12:3

- But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. Ps. 37:11

- Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matt. 11:29

6. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

- As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. Ps. 42:1

- Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: Amos 8:11

- And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6:35

7. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

- He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Prov. 19:17

- And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Matt. 25:40

- Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:38

8. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

- He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. Ps. 24:4

- Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. Ezek. 36:25

- And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Acts 15:9

9. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

- If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Rom. 12:18

- Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Heb. 12:14

- And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. James 3:18

10. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

- Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Luke 6:22

- And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Acts 5:41

- But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; 1 Pet. 3:14

11. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

- Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face. Ps. 69:7

- And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. Luke 21:17

- If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 1 Pet. 4:14

12. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

- Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. Neh. 9:26

- But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: Matt. 6:20

- And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Acts 5:41

13. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

- And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt. Lev. 2:13

- Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another. Mark 9:50

- Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Col. 4:6

14. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

- Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12

- For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: Eph. 5:8

- That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Phil. 2:15

15. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

- Speak unto Aaron and say unto him, When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light over against the candlestick. Num. 8:2

- And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? Mark 4:21

- No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. Luke 8:16

16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

- But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men. Matt. 9:8

- Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. James 3:13

- Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Pet. 2:12

17. Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

- Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, Ps. 40:7

- And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Luke 24:44

- Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. Rom. 3:31

18. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

- But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. Ps. 102:27

- For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Ps. 119:89

- And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail. Luke 16:17

19. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

- Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Matt. 11:11

- For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Gal. 3:10

- For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

20. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

- All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. Matt. 23:3

- For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. Rom. 10:3

- And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: Phil. 3:9

21. Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

- Thou shalt not kill. Ex. 20:13

- He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. Ex. 21:12

- And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah, city by city, 2 Chron. 19:5

22. But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

- And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. James 3:6

- Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 1 John 3:15

- If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 1 John 4:20

23. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

- Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the LORD empty: Deut. 16:16

- And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Sam. 15:22

- And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:25

24. Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

- For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: Matt. 6:14

- Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. Rom. 12:17

- I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. 1 Tim. 2:8

25. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

- And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom. Gen. 32:3

- Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. Job 22:21

- Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. Prov. 25:8

26. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

- And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. Matt. 18:34

- Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Matt. 25:41

- And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. Mark 12:42

27. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

- Thou shalt not commit adultery. Ex. 20:14

- And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. Lev. 20:10

- Neither shalt thou commit adultery. Deut. 5:18

28. But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

- And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. 2 Sam. 11:2

- I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? Job 31:1

- Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. Prov. 6:25

29. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

- For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. Rom. 8:13

- But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Cor. 9:27

- Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: Col. 3:5

30. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

- Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. Matt. 18:8

- Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. 1 Cor. 8:13

- Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. Heb. 12:4

31. It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

- When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favor in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. Deut. 24:1

- They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD. Jer. 3:1

- They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? Matt. 19:7

32. But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

- Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery. Luke 16:18

- So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Rom. 7:3

- And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: 1 Cor. 7:10

33. Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

- And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD. Lev. 19:12

- When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee. Deut. 23:21

- Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: Ps. 50:14

34. But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

- Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbor's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good. Ex. 22:11

- Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? Isa. 66:1

- But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. James 5:12

35. Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

- But I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel. 2 Chron. 6:6

- Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. Ps. 48:2

- Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? Isa. 66:1

36. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

- Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? Matt. 6:27

- But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Matt. 10:30

- And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? Luke 12:25

37. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

- These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates: Zech. 8:16

- When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay? 2 Cor. 1:17

- But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. James 5:12

38. Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

- If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. Ex. 21:22

- Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again. Lev. 24:20

- And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. Deut. 19:21

39. But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

- I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. Isa. 50:6

- He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach. Lam. 3:30

- Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Rom. 12:19

40. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

- If thou at all take thy neighbor's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: Ex. 22:26

- Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? 1 Cor. 6:7

- For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Heb. 10:34

41. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

- And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. Matt. 27:32

- And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. Luke 14:23

- As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. Gal. 6:12

42. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

- He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Prov. 19:17

- But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Heb. 13:16

- But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 1 John 3:17

43. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

- Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD. Lev. 19:18

- Thou shalt not seek their peace nor their prosperity all thy days for ever. Deut. 23:6

- For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Gal. 5:14

44. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

- If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. Ex. 23:4

- But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Luke 6:27

- And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. Acts 7:60

45. That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

- Is there any number of his armies? and upon whom doth not his light arise? Job 25:3

- But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Luke 6:35

- Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; Eph. 5:1

46. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

- Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Matt. 6:1

- For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. Luke 6:32

- And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. Luke 6:34

47. And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

- For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Matt. 5:20

- Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. Luke 14:12

- My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. James 2:1

48. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

- And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. Gen. 17:1

- Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy. Lev. 19:2

- Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Col. 1:28
