Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, - And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. Mark 3:22 - Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. Mark 7:1 - And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? Luke 5:21 2. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. - And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. Luke 11:38 - And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. Gal. 1:14 - Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Col. 2:8 3. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? - He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Mark 7:6 - Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. Mark 7:13 - Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Titus 1:14 4. For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. - Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Ex. 20:12 - And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death. Ex. 21:17 - Honor thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Deut. 5:16 5. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; - Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer. Prov. 28:24 - Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29 - But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 1 Tim. 5:8 6. And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. - Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. Deut. 4:2 - How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. Jer. 8:8 - Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. Rom. 3:31 7. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, - Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. Matt. 6:2 - Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Matt. 7:5 - Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Matt. 23:23 8. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. - Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Isa. 29:13 - And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ezek. 33:31 - Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Acts 8:21 9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. - Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. Col. 2:23 - Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Titus 1:14 - Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. Heb. 13:9 10. And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: - And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, the LORD hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hearken, O people, every one of you. 1 Kings 22:28 - And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. Neh. 8:2 - Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Isa. 55:3 11. Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. - But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. Acts 10:14 - I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Rom. 14:14 - For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 1 Tim. 4:4 12. Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? - Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. Matt. 17:27 - It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. Rom. 14:21 - Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: 1 Cor. 10:32 13. But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. - To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. Isa. 61:3 - As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. Matt. 13:40 - Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. John 15:2 14. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. - His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Isa. 56:10 - Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! Matt. 23:16 - And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, Rom. 2:19 15. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable. - Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. Matt. 13:36 - But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples. Mark 4:34 - His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. John 16:29 16. And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? - Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Matt. 16:9 - And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? Mark 4:13 - Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? John 14:9 17. Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? - Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? Mark 7:19 - And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. Acts 10:15 - Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. 1 Cor. 6:13 18. But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. - The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. Prov. 15:28 - O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Matt. 12:34 - And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. James 3:6 19. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: - And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Gen. 6:5 - And the LORD smelled a sweet savor; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. Gen. 8:21 - The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jer. 17:9 20. These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. - Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. Matt. 15:2 - Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Matt. 23:25 - If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Cor. 3:17 21. Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. - All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee. Josh. 13:6 - Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Matt. 11:21 - And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him. Mark 3:8 22. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. - Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. Ps. 4:1 - Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. Matt. 17:15 - The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. Mark 7:26 23. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. - Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit. Ps. 28:1 - Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer. Lam. 3:8 - And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. Matt. 14:15 24. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. - All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isa. 53:6 - These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: Matt. 10:5 - Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. Acts 3:26 25. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. - And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. Gen. 32:26 - And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. Matt. 8:2 - Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. Luke 18:5 26. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. - Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. Matt. 7:6 - We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, Gal. 2:15 - Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. Phil. 3:2 27. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. - I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands. Gen. 32:10 - The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. Matt. 8:8 - And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. Luke 15:19 28. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. - When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Matt. 8:10 - And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. Matt. 8:13 - But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. Matt. 9:22 29. And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there. - And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. Matt. 4:18 - And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: Matt. 5:1 - And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. Mark 7:31 30. And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: - Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Ps. 103:3 - Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Isa. 35:5 - And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. Matt. 4:23 31. Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel. - But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. Isa. 29:23 - But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men. Matt. 9:8 - And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. Matt. 9:33 32. Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. - But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Matt. 9:36 - And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. Matt. 14:14 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Heb. 4:15 33. And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? - And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month. Num. 11:21 - And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat. 2 Kings 4:42 - And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. Matt. 14:15 34. And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. - And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? Luke 24:41 - There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? John 6:9 - As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. John 21:9 35. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. - And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. Matt. 14:19 - And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. Mark 6:39 - For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. Luke 9:14 36. And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. - And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. Matt. 26:26 - And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. Luke 24:30 - And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. Acts 27:35 37. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. - So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD. 2 Kings 4:44 - For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. Ps. 107:9 - And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. Matt. 14:20 38. And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children. - And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children. Ex. 12:37 - Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart. 1 Sam. 30:22 - And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. Matt. 14:21 39. And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala. - And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. Matt. 8:23 - And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
