1. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

- Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Luke 3:1

- Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead; Luke 9:7

- And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. Luke 23:8

2. And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

- And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. Matt. 16:14

- And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. Mark 6:14

- And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets. Mark 8:28

3. For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

- Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; Matt. 4:12

- For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. Mark 6:17

- But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, Luke 3:19

4. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

- Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness. Lev. 18:16

- And if a man shall take his brother's wife, it is an unclean thing: he hath uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless. Lev. 20:21

- Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. 2 Sam. 12:9

5. And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

- But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. Matt. 21:26

- But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet. Matt. 21:46

- Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: Mark 6:19

6. But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

- And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. Gen. 40:20

- In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him: Est. 1:3

- And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; Mark 6:21

7. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

- Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these. Lev. 5:4

- Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom. Est. 5:3

- And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom. Est. 7:2

8. And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

- And his offering was one silver charger, the weight thereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them were full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering: Num. 7:13

- And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan. Judg. 7:25

- The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul. Prov. 29:10

9. And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

- And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel, Judg. 11:39

- Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him. Dan. 6:14

- Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: Matt. 23:34

10. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

- But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. 2 Chron. 36:16

- But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Matt. 17:12

- And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. Mark 6:28

11. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

- The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul. Prov. 29:10

- But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it. Jer. 22:17

- And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. Rev. 17:6

12. And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

- Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years. Judg. 16:31

- He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. Matt. 27:58

- And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. Acts 8:2

13. When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

- But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; Matt. 12:15

- And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. Luke 9:10

- Jesus wept. John 11:35

14. And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

- And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. Matt. 4:23

- But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Matt. 9:36

- For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Heb. 4:15

15. And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

- But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. Matt. 15:23

- And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: Mark 6:35

- And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. Mark 8:3

16. But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

- And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat. 2 Kings 4:42

- If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; Job 31:16

- Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 2 Cor. 9:7

17. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

- And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month. Num. 11:21

- And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. Matt. 15:34

- There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? John 6:9

18. He said, Bring them hither to me.

- Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. Matt. 17:17

- Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. Matt. 21:2

- Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. John 21:10

19. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

- And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. Matt. 26:26

- And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. Luke 24:30

- And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. Acts 27:35

20. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

- So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD. 2 Kings 4:44

- And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. Joel 2:26

- And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. Matt. 15:37

21. And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

- And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children. Matt. 15:38

- And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. John 6:10

- Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. Acts 4:4

22. And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

- Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. Matt. 13:36

- And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala. Matt. 15:39

- And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. Mark 6:45

23. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

- But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. Matt. 6:6

- And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. Luke 6:12

- When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. John 6:15

24. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

- O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. Isa. 54:11

- And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. Matt. 8:24

- And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. Mark 6:48

25. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

- Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. Job 9:8

- The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea. Ps. 93:4

- And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, Rev. 10:2

26. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

- And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. 1 Sam. 28:13

- Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. Job 4:14

- But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. Luke 24:37

27. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

- And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. Matt. 9:2

- And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. Matt. 17:7

- And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome. Acts 23:11

28. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

- The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. Matt. 8:8

- And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. Luke 22:33

- Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. John 21:7

29. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

- And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Matt. 17:20

- Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark 9:23

- I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Phil. 4:13

30. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

- And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? 2 Kings 6:15

- Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. Ps. 69:1

- And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. Mark 9:24

31. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

- Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Matt. 6:30

- And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. Matt. 8:26

- But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. James 1:6

32. And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

- He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Ps. 107:29

- So they look up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. Jonah 1:15

- And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. Mark 6:51

33. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

- And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matt. 16:16

- And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. Mark 15:39

- She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. John 11:27

34. And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

- And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. Mark 6:53

- And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, Luke 5:1

- When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. John 6:24

35. And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

- And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. Matt. 4:24

- And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. Mark 1:32

- And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. Mark 6:55

36. And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

- Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: Num. 15:38

- And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: Matt. 9:20

- And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. Luke 6:19
