At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat. - When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbor, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbor's standing corn. Deut. 23:25 - And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. Mark 2:23 - And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. Luke 6:1 2. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. - But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: Ex. 20:10 - And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. Matt. 12:10 - And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? Luke 14:3 3. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; - Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present. 1 Sam. 21:3 - Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? Matt. 12:5 - And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: Mark 12:10 4. How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? - And thou shalt set upon the table showbread before me always. Ex. 25:30 - And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. Ex. 29:32 - And it shall be Aaron's and his sons'; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the LORD made by fire by a perpetual statute. Lev. 24:9 5. Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? - And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof: Num. 28:9 - Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? Neh. 13:17 - Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. John 7:22 6. But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. - But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built! 2 Chron. 6:18 - Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. Mal. 3:1 - The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. Matt. 12:41 7. But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. - And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Sam. 15:22 - For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. Hos. 6:6 - But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Matt. 9:13 8. For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. - But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. Matt. 9:6 - And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Mark 2:27 - I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Rev. 1:10 9. And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: - And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. Matt. 4:23 - And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. Luke 4:16 - And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. Luke 6:6 10. And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. Matt. 12:2 - And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. Luke 13:14 - Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. John 9:16 11. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? - If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. Ex. 23:4 - Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again. Deut. 22:4 - And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? Luke 14:5 12. How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. - Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Matt. 6:26 - Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Matt. 10:31 - And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace. Mark 3:4 13. Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. - And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. Luke 13:13 - And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. John 5:9 - And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. Acts 3:8 14. Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. - When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: Matt. 27:1 - And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. John 5:16 - Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. John 11:53 15. And charged them that they should not make him known: - And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. Matt. 8:4 - And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. Matt. 9:30 - And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. Matt. 17:9 17. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, - For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Matt. 3:3 - That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Matt. 4:14 - That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. - And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; Isa. 11:2 - Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. Isa. 42:1 - The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, Luke 4:18 19. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. - He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. Isa. 42:2 - Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. Zech. 9:9 - Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matt. 11:29 20. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. - Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him. 2 Kings 18:21 - The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Ps. 51:17 - A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. Isa. 42:3 21. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. - And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. Isa. 11:10 - He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. Isa. 42:4 - And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. Rom. 15:12 22. Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. - And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. Isa. 29:18 - Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. Isa. 35:6 - As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. Matt. 9:32 23. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? - And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us. Matt. 9:27 - And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. Matt. 9:33 - Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? John 4:29 24. But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. - But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils. Matt. 9:34 - The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? John 7:20 - Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. John 8:52 25. And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: - Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Ps. 139:2 - And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? Matt. 9:4 - And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. John 2:25 26. And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? - Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Matt. 4:10 - Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. John 12:31 - Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. John 14:30 27. Matt. 12:41 - And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. Luke 9:49 - Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the LORD Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. Acts 19:13 28. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. - From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matt. 4:17 - And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. Luke 10:9 - But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. Luke 11:20 29. Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. - Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? Isa. 49:24 - Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isa. 53:12 - And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, Rev. 20:2 30. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. - No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matt. 6:24 - For he that is not against us is on our part. Mark 9:40 - And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us. Luke 9:50 31. Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. - Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: Mark 3:28 - Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Heb. 10:29 - If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 1 John 5:16 32. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. - But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Mark 3:29 - Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. Luke 23:34 - And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. John 7:12 33. Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. - Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Matt. 7:16 - For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. Luke 6:44 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. John 15:4 34. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. - But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Matt. 3:7 - But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. Matt. 15:18 - Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Eph. 4:29 35. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. - The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. Ps. 37:30 - The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth. Prov. 10:20 - A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. Prov. 25:11 36. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. - In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. Prov. 10:19 - In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Rom. 2:16 - Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead. 1 Pet. 4:5 37. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. - He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Prov. 13:3 - If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. James 1:26 - For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. James 3:2 38. Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. - And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him. Mark 8:11 - And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. Luke 11:16 - Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? John 2:18 39. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: - But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore. Isa. 57:3 - And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. Luke 16:31 - For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 1 Cor. 1:22 40. For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. - Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Jonah 1:17 - From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Matt. 16:21 - And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. Matt. 17:23 41. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. - So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. Jonah 3:5 - But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. Matt. 12:6 - Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. Matt. 23:36 42. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. - And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together. 1 Kings 5:12 - And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart. 2 Chron. 9:1 - If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5 43. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. - And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. Job 1:7 - When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. Mark 9:25 - Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Pet. 5:8 44. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. - But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. Ps. 81:11 - Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. Matt. 12:29 - Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Matt. 23:26 45. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. - And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. Mark 5:9 - For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, Heb. 6:4 - For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 2 Pet. 2:20 46. While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. - Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? Matt. 13:55 - And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself. Mark 3:21 - These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. Acts 1:14 47. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. - And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. Deut. 33:9 - He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Matt. 10:37 - Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. John 2:4 49. And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! - And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. Matt. 28:7 - Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. - Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
