1. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

- Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Luke 3:1

- And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar. Acts 11:28

- First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. Rom. 1:8

2. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

- After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. Acts 5:37

- And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor. Acts 23:24

- But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound. Acts 24:27

3. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

- And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled. Josh. 20:6

- And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father. 2 Sam. 17:23

- Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee. 2 Sam. 19:37

4. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

- And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. 1 Sam. 16:1

- But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Mic. 5:2

- Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? John 7:42

5. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

- Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Matt. 1:18

- And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. Matt. 1:25

- To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. Luke 1:27

6. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

- For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. Gen. 21:2

- Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. Luke 1:57

- And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. Rev. 12:5

7. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

- Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isa. 7:14

- Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? Matt. 13:55

- But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, Gal. 4:4

8. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

- Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. Ex. 3:1

- He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds: Ps. 78:70

- I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. John 10:11

9. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

- And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. Ex. 3:2

- And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. Dan. 10:7

- And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. Luke 1:12

10. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

- Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. Isa. 9:3

- But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. Luke 1:13

- And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. Luke 1:19

11. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

- For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isa. 9:6

- And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matt. 1:21

- And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

12. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

- And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. Ex. 3:12

- And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees? 2 Kings 20:9

- And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof. Isa. 37:30

13. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

- And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 2 Kings 6:17

- Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. Ps. 103:21

- Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. Ps. 148:2

14. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

- For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isa. 9:6

- Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. Luke 19:38

- And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. Eph. 2:17

15. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

- Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. Matt. 2:2

- The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. Matt. 12:42

- And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. Luke 24:51

16. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

- And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. Matt. 28:8

- And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; Luke 1:39

- The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, John 4:28

17. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

- Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. Mal. 3:16

- Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him. Luke 8:39

- Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. John 1:45

18. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

- And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. Luke 2:33

- And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. Luke 2:47

- For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. Acts 4:20

19. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

- And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying. Gen. 37:11

- But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Dan. 12:4

- And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. Luke 2:51

20. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

- And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God. Luke 18:43

- And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; Luke 19:37

- Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:47

21. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

- And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. Gen. 17:12

- And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matt. 1:21

- And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. Luke 1:31

22. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

- Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean. Lev. 12:2

- And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled. Lev. 12:4

- Every thing that openeth the matrix in all flesh, which they bring unto the LORD, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be thine: nevertheless the firstborn of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem. Num. 18:15

23. (As it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

- Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. Ex. 13:2

- Because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am the LORD. Num. 3:13

- But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, Gal. 4:4

24. And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

- And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest: Lev. 12:6

- And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean. Lev. 12:8

- For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. 2 Cor. 8:9

25. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

- Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. Isa. 52:9

- Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow. Jer. 31:13

- Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the LORD shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem. Zech. 1:17

26. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

- (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:) Ps. 49:8

- But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God. Luke 9:27

- Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. John 8:51

27. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

- Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. Acts 8:29

- And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house: Acts 11:12

- After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. Acts 16:7

28. Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

- O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Ps. 105:1

- Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Ps. 33:1

- And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. Luke 1:64

29. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

- And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. Gen. 15:15

- And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive. Gen. 46:30

- He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness. Isa. 57:2

30. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

- He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Ps. 98:3

- And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Luke 3:6

- And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

31. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

- Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously. Ps. 96:10

- Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. Isa. 45:22

- The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. Isa. 52:10

32. A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

- The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Isa. 9:2

- And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Isa. 49:6

33. And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

- But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! Matt. 8:27

- And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. Luke 2:18

- And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. Luke 2:48

34. And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

- And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Isa. 8:14

- But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 1 Cor. 1:23

- And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Pet. 2:8

35. (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

- If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. John 15:22

- Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. John 19:25

- For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb. 4:12

36. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

- And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. Judg. 4:4

- And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. Acts 21:9

- But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. 1 Cor. 11:5

37. And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

- Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. Neh. 1:6

- Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD. Ps. 134:1

- Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. 1 Tim. 5:5

38. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

- Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD's hand double for all her sins. Isa. 40:2

- Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. Isa. 52:9

40. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

- And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. Luke 2:52

41. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

- Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:) Ex. 23:15

- Three items in the year all thy males shall appear before the LORD God. Ex. 23:17

- And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. 1 Sam. 1:21

42. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

- Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem: 2 Chron. 33:1

- For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him. Luke 8:42

- And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, Luke 8:43

43. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

- In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. Ex. 12:18

- And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the LORD. 2 Chron. 30:21

- Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? 2 Cor. 13:5

44. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

- When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. Ps. 42:4

- And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Isa. 2:3

- Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: Matt. 7:7

45. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

- And when Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 2 Sam. 17:20

- I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love. Song 5:8

- Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. Zech. 8:22

46. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

- The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. Isa. 50:4

- Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it. Jer. 5:1

- I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day. Acts 22:3

47. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

- I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. Ps. 119:99

- And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. Mark 1:22

- And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? John 7:15

48. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

- When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son? 1 Sam. 10:2
