1. But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.

- What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness? 1 Cor. 4:21

- Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not your's but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. 2 Cor. 12:14

- For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults: 2 Cor. 12:20

2. For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?

- Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Rom. 12:15

- And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. 1 Cor. 12:26

- For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. 2 Cor. 7:8

3. And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

- And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed. 2 Cor. 12:21

- I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be. Gal. 5:10

- Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say. Philem. 1:21

4. For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

- Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law. Ps. 119:136

- Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. Acts 20:31

- Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 2 Cor. 7:9

5. But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.

- A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him. Prov. 17:25

- And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. 1 Cor. 5:2

- Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all. Gal. 4:12

6. Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.

- To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Cor. 5:5

- For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 2 Cor. 7:11

- Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction. 2 Cor. 13:10

7. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

- Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Gal. 6:1

- And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Eph. 4:32

- Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Col. 3:13

8. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

- For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Gal. 5:13

- As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Gal. 6:10

- And of some have compassion, making a difference: Jude 1:22

9. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.

- Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. Ex. 16:4

- And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. 2 Cor. 7:15

- But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel. Phil. 2:22

10. To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

- Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Matt. 18:18

- Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. John 20:23

- And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Eph. 4:32

11. Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

- And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 1 Chron. 21:1

- And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: Luke 22:31

- Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Pet. 5:8

12. Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,

- And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. Acts 14:27

- And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. Acts 16:8

- For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries. 1 Cor. 16:9

13. I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

- And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia. Acts 20:1

- For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. 2 Cor. 7:5

- I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps? 2 Cor. 12:18

14. Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

- Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee. Song 1:3

- But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 15:57

- And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Col. 2:15

15. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

- And the LORD smelled a sweet savor; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. Gen. 8:21

- For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Cor. 1:18

- And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. Eph. 5:2

16. To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

- And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; Luke 2:34

- And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. John 9:39

- And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Pet. 2:8

17. For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

- The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof? Jer. 5:31

- But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 2 Cor. 4:2

- For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: 1 Thess. 2:5
